Disability Awareness Week

Monday, 11/29, 2:00 P.M.

Main Event Description: This event will serve as an introduction to disability activism by two highly recognized disability rights advocates. Through their expertise and experience in disability right advocation, CSBSJU hopes to have a fruitful discussion about the intersectionality of disabilities. This discussion will serve as a way to reflect on our own ableist ideology, and understand the diverse complexity of disability and disability rights.

                Locations: Participants can join via Zoom and/or attend an in-person showing at

                Time: 2:00 p.m. -3:15

  1. In-Person viewing will be at SJU in Quad 170 (The Founder’s Room)

A live question and answer session will be made available during the session for both locations.


Recorded viewing: For those who are unable to attend on Monday at 2:00, a Recorded viewing will occur later that evening.

Wednesday 12/1

                Event: Identity and Language Panel

Description: Join members of our community (faculty, staff and students) for a discussion on the role disability, ableism and intersecting identities play a part in their everyday lives as members of our community. This conversation will occur in Upper Gorecki 204A, Wednesday, December 1st from 5:30-7 PM.

                Time: 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Thursday 12/2
                Event: Celebrating Disability Inclusion

Description: Join us in the Multicultural Center Thursday, December 2nd to celebrate our first Disability Awareness Week. Refreshments will be served. The team from Student Accessibility Services will be present from 2PM to 4PM to meet with community members to share more information about their office and services

                Time: 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Event: Film Showing –  Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution

"Being Heumann" Book Discussion

Please join us on Tuesday, November 30th at 4:30pm at the Multicultural Center for a discussion of Judy Heumann's book, "Being Heumann". The first 30 peole who sign up will receive a free copy of the book. Also, join us on Monday, November 29th to hear Judy speak at a panel discussion (via Zoom) at 2:00pm in the Founder's Room at SJU.

Judy Heumann is an internationally recognized leader in the Disability Community and a lifelong civil rights advocate for disadvantaged people. She has advocated for disability rights at home and abroad, serving in the Clinton and Obama administrations and as the World Bank's first adviser on disability and development.

We have one audio book (CD) available at CSB and SJU Libraries. If you are interested in checking out the audio book, please let Sarah Gewirtz ( know and she can assist in getting that to you. This event is co-sponsored by Becoming Community and counts toward the certificate program.
