CSE is used primarily by students and scholars in the sciences, particularly in medicine, natural sciences, and life sciences.
The CSE Manual: scientific style and format for authors, editors, and publishers is written and edited by the Council of Science Editors.
CSE Scientific Style and Format uses 3 systems for citations, all of which are in-text systems. The order of end references depends on the system used for citations.
- Citation-sequence: End references are listed in the sequence in which they first appear within the text by number. The same number is used for subsequent in-text references to the same document and designated with a superscript number (all numbers in the text are superscript).
- Name-year: End references are unnumbered and alphabetical by author and year of publication. In-text parenthetical includes author surname and publication year, no punctuation.
- Citation-name: End references are listed alphabetically by the first author's surname. References are numbered in that sequence, and those end reference numbers are used in-text with a superscript number.
Check with your instructor to see which edition and system to use for your citations.
