Terms used in Omeka

Terms used when adding ITEMS:

Item: the basic unit of an Omeka site. Can be photo, art, person, idea, etc.

Collection: a set of items grouped together. Items can only belong to one collection at a time.

Dublin Core Metadata: standardized metadata set designed for the web. Provides information about the item.

Item Type: describes what the item is, such as photo, website, book, etc.

Description: details about the item itself

Tags: help define your item with one word

Terms used in EXHIBITS:

Exhibit: a thematic tour or story of particular items. Items can belong to more than one exhibit.

Section: a group of pages

Pages: a group of items with descriptions

Description: details about the exhibit and the story of the items 

Slug: a short title with no spaces - shows in URL

Caption: appears directly under the item image, includes Creator, Title, Date, Provenance (where it is from), Medium/Material (photo, painting, etc.)

Simple Pages

Pages on your Omeka site that are not part of an exhibit or item. For example, an "About" page.

Descriptions & Captions

You will write descriptions, captions, and fill in Dublin Core metadata for the Omeka project:

Items:

  • Each digital image (item) will have a description AND other Dublin Core metadata filled in, including Rights (citations).

Exhibits:

  • Each exhibit photo will have a caption underneath
  • Captions will include:
    • Artists’s name
    • Title of work/image (if no title, use descriptive sentence)
    • Medium of work (photo, painting, etc.)
    • Provenance or collection
    • Size of work (cm, in, pixels)
  • Your group will write a description of your decade
