What is Metadata?

Metadata is: 

  • Used to describe objects and build relationships between objects
  • "Structured information that describes, explains, locates, or otherwise makes it easier to retrieve, use, or manage an information resource."  (McFall, 2011)

Dublin Core Metadata Element Set

Dublin Core Metadata Elements

A standardized metadata set designed for the web that provides information for an item. 

Elements:

Title: a name given to the resources
Creator: an entity primarily responsible for making the resource
Subject: the topic of the resource
Description: an account of the resource
Publisher: an entity responsible for making the resource available
Contributor: an entity responsible for making contributions to the resource
Date: a point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource
Rights: information about rights held in and over the resource (citations)
