Information Literacy 1 Tutorials

Tutorials for INTG 100, HONR 110, INTG 205

Welcome!

Welcome to the CSB and SJU Libraries' Info Lit 1 tutorials! These tutorials are specifically designed by our instruction librarians for students in INTG 100: Learning FoundationsHONR 110: Honors Learning Foundations, and INTG 205: Transfer Seminar to help you meet the Integrations Curriculum's Info Lit 1 goal for your course:

  • Information Literacy 1 (Beginner): Students access appropriate information through common search strategies. They cite sources appropriately and articulate the value of accurate citations. Their papers are free of plagiarism.

Following this initial orientation, each Info Lit 1 tutorial will walk you through some basics and offer tips to help you make successful decisions as you choose a research topic, find background information, search online and in Libraries collections, evaluate the information you find, and finally cite your sources. Along the way, we'll ask you to reflect on things like today's information environment and your learning processes. We hope these tutorials will help you ask good questions and begin developing the critical thinking and information literacy skills you'll need to succeed in college and after graduation as discerning consumers, sharers, and creators of information.

Tutorial Quizzes

Each tutorial includes a short quiz at the end. Some questions are based on content from the tutorials' embedded videos, so make sure to watch them. Check with your instructor to see if you need to upload a Certificate of Completion PDF for each quiz in Canvas.

Learning Objectives

By the end of Tutorial 1: Orientation, you should know how to:

  • Get research help from a librarian.
  • Access the Libraries website to find additional information about our resources and services.

Estimated tutorial time: 15 minutes

Getting Help: Librarian Research Consultations

Each Learning Foundations or Transfer Seminar class is paired with a Learning and Research Librarian who's here to help you throughout the semester. They'll be visiting your class later on to introduce themselves and go over some key information in person. Each academic department is paired with a librarian too - go to our Research Appointment page to see the Subjects listings for each librarian. If you already know what you're planning to major in, take a look and see which librarian supports that major!

If you ever want to meet with a librarian outside of class - any class! - for help finding sources or brainstorming next steps in an assignment, just click on that same Research Appointment page and choose the librarian you'd like to meet with. You can schedule individual or small-group meetings and they can be held over Zoom or in person. Just make sure you know if your librarian's office is at CSB or SJU so you know where to meet them!

For any quick assignment-related questions, it's fine to email your librarian instead of booking an appointment. You can also try just stopping by for help. For general library-related questions,  you can call our library help desks at x2122 (SJU Alcuin) or x5611 (CSB Clemens).

Library Buildings and Hours

Library Buildings: The CSB and SJU Libraries have locations on both campuses: at SJU, you can visit Alcuin Library and the Reinhart Learning Commons (map), and at CSB you can visit Clemens Library (map) and the Benedicta Arts Center's Music Library (map).

Hours: Our building hour details are available here.

Building Partners: Several other academic support offices are housed in our libraries, so there's always a good reason to visit!

  • SJU Alcuin Library is where you can find The Study, The Writing Center, and IT's Instructional Technology spaces.
  • CSB Clemens Library is where you can find the IT Help Desk and the Experience Hub, which includes the Experiential & Professional Development (XPD) office, the Office for Undergraduate Research & Scholars (OURS), the Center for Global Education, and the Fleishhacker Center for Ethical Leadership in Action.

The Libraries Website

Website: The CSB and SJU Libraries website is your central portal to library information, services, and resources:

You might want to bookmark the Libraries' homepage (https://csbsju.edu/libraries), or remember to search for the Libraries Tool in myCSBSJU - this will redirect you to our homepage.

Here are a couple of other things we want to make sure you know about the Libraries:

1. Borrow Things with Your Student ID

Your student ID works as your campus library card! Bring your ID with you to borrow (or "check out") items from the Libraries. All Bennies and Johnnies can check out books from any of our locations (Alcuin, Clemens, or the BAC Music Library) and you get to keep the books you borrow until the end of the semester. In addition to books, the Libraries offer equipment for loan that ranges from laptops, microphones, cameras, and storage drives, to things like tabletop games and video games and consoles.  Please remember that these items are meant to be used by the entire CSB and SJU community, so take good care of them and please return them on time.

2. Your Library Account

On the Libraries homepage, select the "Services" dropdown, then "Borrowing," and click the "My Account" link to log in to your account. You'll be able to see your borrowing record and due dates, renew items, or check the status of requested items.

3. News Apps

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! All CSB and SJU students have free access to several subscription news apps, including the Minnesota Star TribuneThe New York TimesThe Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. Starting this year, students also have full access to The Atlantic! To sign up or learn more, look under the Newspaper Apps heading here

4. Off-Campus Access

Whether you're off-campus just for the weekend or for a full semester on a study abroad program (lucky you!), you can still access the Libraries' electronic resources. Just go to the library homepage and search our catalog or databases for eBooks or journal article PDFs from there. You'll be prompted to log in using your CSB and SJU username and password (the same ones you use to log in to your student email and Canvas) so that you can access our collections.
