Terms used in Omeka

Terms used when adding ITEMS:

Items are types of individual files: images, text, or multi-media (no larger than 128mb)

  • Dublin Core Metadata: a standardized metadata set designed for the web or digital collections
  • Metadata: keywords to describe an item. Item metadata terms include "Title," "Description," "Creator," and "Date"
  • Collection: An Omeka collection is a grouping for uploaded items. The feature is useful to sort items related to different projects or exhibits

Terms used in EXHIBITS:

Omeka exhibits are digital showcases of the items in a collection. You can also add text, audio, video, or other storytelling tools.

  • Metadata: keywords to describe an item. Exhibit metadata terms include "Title," "Slug," "Credits," "Tags"
  • Slug: a short title that shows in the URL
  • Tags: words for searching withing the exhibit, such as genre
  • Page: the exhibit page where items and text for the exhibit are added
  • Caption: appears under the item image in the exhibit

  • Metadata is used to describe objects and build relationships between objects.
    • “Structured information that describes, explains, locates, or otherwise makes it easier to retrieve, use, or manage an information resource.” 
  • Metadata provides a way of accessing and organizing data
  • It uses key terms and phrases for finding digital objects
Dublin Core Metadata

A standardized metadata set designed for the web; information for the item

Elements of Dublin Core Metadata:

  • Title: a name given to the resources
  • Creator: an entity primarily responsible for making the resource
  • Subject: the topic of the resource
  • Description: an account of the resource
  • Publisher: an entity responsible for making the resource available
  • Contributor: an entity responsible for making contributions to the resource
  • Date: a point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource
  • Rights: information about rights held in and over the resource (citations)

Descriptions & Captions

You will write descriptions, captions, and fill in Dublin Core metadata for the Omeka items and exhibits:

Items:

  • Each digital image (item) will have a description AND other Dublin Core metadata filled in, including Rights (citations).

Exhibits:

  • Each exhibit photo will have a caption underneath
  • Captions will include:
    • Artists’s name
    • Title of work/image (if no title, use descriptive sentence)
    • Medium of work (photo, painting, etc.)
    • Provenance or collection
    • Size of work (cm, in, pixels)
  • Your group will write a description of your genre as a trend
